オオゲツヒメは、日本の穀物の代表的な神様です。
日本国の産みの神「イザナギ」と「イザナミ」が淡路島を産み終えた後に、伊予之二名島（イヨノフタナシマ）を産みました。
一つの体に四つの面（顔）があります。
これが四国の起源となります。
その一面の顔が、粟の国（徳島県）となりました。
オオゲツヒメは、伊勢の国の丹生の郷（ニュウノサト）（現 三重県多気郡多気町丹生）から馬に乗って阿波国に来て、この地に粟を広めた食物の女神様です。
「粟(=阿波)の国」の女神とされていることから、代表的な五穀のなかでも特に粟と関係が深い女神様です。
羽山戸神（ハヤマト）の妻となり、植物や山に関係するたくさんの神を生みました。
オオゲツヒメは、身体のどこからでも食物を出すことができる女神でした。
ある日、神の世界で、気の荒い神ソシモリが、オオゲツヒメの身体には、どんな仕掛けがあるのかと面白半分にオオゲツヒメを斬りました。
息も絶え絶えになったオオゲツヒメは末娘のオトゴサヒメを呼びました。
「お前は末っ子で身体も小さい。形見の種をあげるから、千年も万年も尽きぬ命で、安らかな地で暮らすとよい」と言って息を引き取りました。
見る見るうちにオオゲツヒメの遺体から「五穀の種」が芽生えてきました。
末娘のオトゴサヒメは「五穀の種」を手に取り、種を植えるための安らかな地を探すために赤雁の背に乗って旅にでました。
オオゲツヒメは、山との結び付きも強く、山岳地帯での焼き畑農業の作物の女神で、特に粟をよく作っていました。
