オトゴサヒメは、はるか昔の日本で、赤い雁に乗れる程の小さい女神様です。
通称「チビ姫様」とも呼ばれ親しまれております。
心優しい女神様で石見地方の発展を成し遂げました。
雁に乗り穀物の種を、神の国から地上に伝えた女神様です。
オトゴサヒメの母はオオゲツヒメといい、身体のどこからでも食物を出すことができる女神でした。
ある日、神の世界で、気の荒い神ソシモリが、オオゲツヒメの身体には、どんな仕掛けがあるのかと面白半分にオオゲツヒメを斬りました。
息も絶え絶えになったオオゲツヒメは末娘のオトゴサヒメを呼びました。
「お前は末っ子で身体も小さい。形見の種をあげるから、千年も万年も尽きぬ命で、安らかな地で暮らすとよい」と言って息を引き取りました。
見る見るうちにオオゲツヒメの遺体から「五穀の種」が芽生えてきました。
オトゴサヒメは「五穀の種」を手に取り、母の遺言を守るため、種を植えるための安らかな地を探すために赤雁の背に乗って地上界へと旅にでました。
途中、疲れた赤雁が高島（島根県益田市）で休もうとしたところ、大山祇（オオヤマツミ）の使いの鷹が出てきました。
「我らは、肉を喰らう故、五穀の種なぞいらん」とオトゴサヒメを追い払いました。
続いてオトゴサヒメは須津（島根県浜田市）で休もうとしたところ鷲が出てきて同じように追い払らわれてしまいます。
仕方がないので、再び力を振り絞り、オトゴサヒメと赤雁は鎌手大浜（現益田市）の亀島で一休みして、そこから天道山を経由して、比礼振山（島根県益田市）にいきました。
そこは、オトゴサヒメ達を追い払うモノは出てこなかったので「種の里」を作ることにしました。
その地の人達は大喜びで、オトゴサヒメを「種姫」と呼んで崇めました。
ある日、「種の里」でオトゴサヒメは巨人の足跡を見つけました。
その土地のものに聞くと、「ダイダラボッチ」という巨人の足跡でした。
「ダイダラボッチ」は大山祇（オオヤマツミ）の巨人で、悪意は無いのですが、その大きさ故に、動き回る度に里は大騒動となってしまいます。
そうしているうちに「ダイダラボッチ」がやってきました。
オトゴサヒメは、怖くなり逃げるのですが、あまりにも小さい身体ゆえ、誰よりも逃げることが遅く、「ダイダラボッチ」がやってくると命からがら逃げ回るのが精一杯でした。
オトゴサヒメは、「ダイダラボッチ」たちがいると安心した国を造ることはできないと考えました。
なんとかならないかと、再び赤雁の背に乗って「ダイダラボッチ」達の様子を見にいきました。
ある山に差し掛かった時に、山の大穴からいびきが聞こえてきたのです。
オトゴサヒメは「そこにいるのは誰か？」と問いました。
すると「自ら名乗らずに、他人の名を訊くとは何事だ！」と返事がありました。
声の主は淤加美神（オカミ）といって大山祇（オオヤマツミ）の子だったのです。
怖くて仕方ないオトゴサヒメですが、里を守るため、勇気を振り絞って、「直接お会いし話がしたい」と強い調子で申し出ました。
するとオカミは「我は頭が人で体が蛇だから神も人も驚いて気を失うだろう。驚かすのはよくないことだ。それより我が兄の足長土（アシナヅチ）に会いたまえ」と言って、大穴の奥へと隠れてしまいました。
アシナヅチは「ダイダラボッチ」の男のリーダーの巨人でした。
オトゴサヒメは、オカミは雨を降らす良い神であるが、恐ろしい姿のオカミや、アシナヅチら「ダイダラボッチ」たちには、里からは出て行って、もらわないと里は繁栄しないと考えました。
オトゴサヒメは、巨人たちが安心して暮らせる場所を見つけてあげれば、里からは喜んで、出て行ってくれるのではないかと思いつきました。
再び、赤雁に乗って国中駆け回り、三瓶山の麓に、とても広い草原や森を見つけます。
この麓を切り開けば「ダイダラボッチ」たちが安心して、遊んで暮らせる場所になると考えました。
帰路につく途中にオトゴサヒメは、女性の「ダイダラボッチ」の手長土（テナヅチ）に出会いました。
テナヅチは一人で寂しそうにしていました。
オトゴサヒメは心配になって、「あなたは家族や夫はいますか？」と聞きました。
するとテナヅチは「かような長い手と足です、醜い私には夫などできません」とテナヅチは自らを恥じらいながら答えました。
するとオトゴサヒメは、「私も人並み外れたチビだけど、私は母から譲り受けた、種を広める務めがあります。あなたも「ダイダラボッチ」たちを安心して暮らさせる務めがあるはずですよね。あなたはとても優しく美しいダイタラボッチです。私があなたに良い人を紹介します」と言い、オトゴサヒメはアシナヅチを呼びにいきました。そしてアシナヅチとテナヅチを引き合わせたところ二人は恋に落ちました。そこでオトゴサヒメは、二人に結婚して三瓶山の麓に良い土地があるから、仲間たちと一緒に麓に住むことを提案しました。
