ソトオリヒメの父は第19代、允恭天皇（インギョウテンノウ）、母は大中姫（オオナカツヒメ）、兄に木梨軽皇子（キナシノカルノミコ）と穴穂皇子（アナホノミコ）や他の兄弟がいました。
長兄のキナシノカルミコは、妹であるソトオリヒメを恋しく思い、やがてその思いをなし遂げてしまいます。
この時代の皇族は、母が同じ兄弟姉妹の男女関係を禁止していました。
しかし、朝廷内の陰陽師の占いによってキナシノカルミコとソトオリヒメの近親相姦が発覚してしまいます。
この情事を知った、キナシノカルミコの群臣達はキナシノカルミコを信用しなくなり、その弟であるアナホノミコを信用していきました。
そしてしばらく後に、父の允恭天皇（インギョウテンノウ）が崩御しました。
本来であれば長子であるキナシノカルミコが即位するはずが、キナシノカルミコを支持する者はおらず、群臣のほとんどが弟のアナホノミコを天皇として即位することを支持しました。
これを知ったキナシノカルミコは唯一の重臣であった大前小前宿禰（オオマエコマエノスクネ）と共謀して、弟のアナホノミコを討とうとします。
しかし、逆に追いつめられ、最後は、仲間であった重臣の大前小前宿禰（オオマエコマエノスクネ）の裏切りにより、キナシノカルミコは捕えられてしまいました。
その後、四国伊予へ流罪とされました。
キナシノカルミコは「私は必ず戻ってくるから待っていなさい」と、ソトオリヒメに言い残して、流刑地、伊予の道後温泉へ追放されたのです。
その後、ソトオリヒメは、手紙を人に託すことも許されなかったので、伝書鳩を使い、キナシノカルミコへ愛する思いを和歌にして、たくさん送り続けました。
しかし、だんだんとキナシノカルミコからは返事が来なくなってしまいました。
そんな時に、キナシノカルミコが伊予の民を従えて謀反を起こし、弟のアナホノミコとの戦いの準備をしているとの情報が、朝廷に入ってきました。
ソトオリヒメの哀れなほどの、愛を悟っていた母、大中姫(オオナカツヒメ)は、「キナシノカルミコの戦いを止め、そのまま二人でどこか遠くへ逃げなさい」と言い、ソトヨリヒメを伊予に送ることを決めたのです。
もし再び、キナシノカルミコとソトオリヒメが会っていることが発覚すれば、死罪は免れないことを知りながらも、ソトオリヒメは母親の想いを受け止め、伊予へと向かいます。
ソトオリヒメは、「あなたが行ってしまってもうずいぶんになりました、もう待ってはいられません、帰ってこられないならば私が参ります」という意味の歌を残し伊予へ向かいました。
このことを知った弟のアナホノミコは、激怒しキナシノカルミコを討つための大軍勢を出し追いました。
ソトオリヒメは、無事に伊予の国まで到着して、キナシノカルミコと再会しました。
二人は、追ってが追いついてくるまでの、わずかな時間を愛しに費やしました。
そんな中で、二人は、飛鳥朝廷の軍勢が到着することを知ります。
大規模な飛鳥朝廷の軍勢は、伊予の国、近くまで来ていました。
ソトヨリヒメはキナシノカルミコに、母の想いを伝え、戦いを止め、一緒に逃げることを懇願します。
しかし、キナシノカルミコの決心は固く、飛鳥朝廷軍を迎え撃つことにしたのです。
しかし、伊予の軍勢は少なく、飛鳥朝廷の大軍勢に適うわけもなく、ボロボロになっていきます。
弟のアナホノミコは、兄キナシノカルミコを容赦なく追い詰めていきます。
キナシノカルミコは、伊予の民とソトヨリヒメを守るために立ち向かいますが、伊予の軍勢は全滅してしまいました。
最後に残った、ソトヨリヒメとキナシノカルミコは、小舟で沖に出ました。
そして、二人は、これからも永遠の愛を誓い、お互いが用意した短刀で刺し違え、海に飛び込み自害したのでした。
