オトタチバナヒメは、日本武尊（ヤマトタケル）の妻でした。
ヤマトタケルの父は、12代天皇（景行天皇けいこうてんのう）です。

ヤマトタケルの父である景行天皇は、こんな恐るべき男が都にいれば、いつか自分は殺されてしまうと考えました。
よって父の景行天皇はヤマトタケルが都にいないように、日本の遠方の地で朝廷に従わない人々を征伐させるため戦いばかりをさせるように仕向けました。
その戦にいつも同行していたのが、妻「オトタチバナヒメ」です。
ヤマトタケルに、日本の東方面の蝦夷（エミシ）討伐の任が下ります。
戦いの日々に疲れ、人を殺め続けたヤマトタケルはなんのために戦っているのかが、だんだんと判らなくなっていました。
そしてヤマトタケルの一番の理解者、叔母（ヤマトヒメ）の所に相談にいきました。
ヤマトタケルは「叔母様、父は私に早く死んでもらいたいのでしょうか？熊襲（クマソ）や出雲（イズモ）を平定しても、兵士も増やしてもらえず、すぐに東の蝦夷（エミシ）を討伐せよというのです」とヤマトタケルは初めて涙を流しながら心中を告白したのでした。
ヤマトヒメはヤマトタケルが景行天皇の意向を看破し、またその通りだと思いました。
しかし、日本国の情勢は、東の国を無視していられない状況であったことは確かでした。
優しい叔母のヤマトヒメは、景行天皇は日本の平定をできるのは、ヤマトタケルだけだと思い、安心して貴方に任しているのだと諭しました。
ヤマトヒメは伊勢神宮を創建した人であったため、神の力の道具を可愛い甥のために授けました。
困った時に開ける「フシギ袋」と「天叢雲剣」（アマノムラクモノツルギ）
「スサノオがヤマタノオロチより取り出し、アマテラスへ献上した剣」です。
こうしてヤマトタケルは東国遠征に向かうことになります。
ヤマトタケルは、途中の尾張の国（熱田）で、宿泊しました。そして、ミヤズヒメと一夜を共にしました。
その時に天叢雲剣（アマノムラクモノツルギ）が神々しく光り輝いたため、ヤマトタケルはミヤズヒメは物凄い霊力を持っているとわかり、すぐに婚約の誓いをしました。
そして東国遠征が終わった時には、この剣を奉納しに戻ると約束したのです。
その時に妻オトタチバナヒメは、遠く離れた場所から二人を見ていて、涙を流したのでした。
そして、ヤマトタケルの軍勢は相模国に入ります。
相模国の国造役人はヤマトタケルに「この先に広い野原があり、その沼のそばでは非常に荒々しい野盗の一団がいます。国造である、わたしの命令も聞かないで、略奪強奪、し放題なのです。なんとかならないでしょうか」と相談しました。
ヤマトタケルは、野盗の征伐を約束しました。
次の日、ヤマトタケル一行は、野盗がいる野原に向かいました。
草原の奥に野盗が隠れれていると国造に聞き、早速、ヤマトタケルの一行は草をかき分けながら進んでいきました。
すると、ヤマトタケルの頭上を、次々と火矢が飛びました。
火矢はヤマトタケル一行の周りに次々と着火しました。
その火は野原の枯れ草を次々に燃やし、風にあおられ勢いよく燃えあがり、あっという間にヤマトタケル一行を火の海の中に入れてしまったのです。
慌ててヤマトタケルは国造の方を振り返りました。
すると、そこには、笑いながら野盗と立っている国造を見たのです。
国造は、表ではヤマトタケルに恭順の意を示しながら、裏では野盗勢力とつながり、ヤマトタケルへの謀反を企んでいたのでした。
国造と野盗はヤマトタケルはいずれ焼け死ぬだろうと考え、笑いながら帰っていきました。
燃え盛る炎の中、妻のオトタチバナヒメは息ができずに苦しみます。
ヤマトタケルは、妻を背に背負い、火にあたらないように自分が壁となりました。
その時に、叔母ヤマトヒメの言った言葉を思い出しました。
「困った時は、このフシギ袋を開けなさい」と言われたことを。
早速ヤマトタケルは、フシギ袋を開けました。そこには火打石が入っていたのです。
そして、ひらめいたヤマトタケルは、持っていた天叢雲剣（アマノムラクモノツルギ）で自分の周りの草を薙ぎ払いました。
神の力が宿った剣です。あっと言う間に、ヤマトタケル一行の周りの草を薙ぎ払い、安全地帯を作り、迫りくる火が、こないようにしました。
次にヤマトタケルは、今度は薙ぎ払った草を、物凄い力で遠くに放り投げて、火打ち石で火を付けたのです。
遠くに投げた草からも火がついて、火はヤマトタケルのほうからドンドン離れるように周囲に広がり、野原を焼き尽くして鎮火したのでした。
この時に使った天叢雲剣（アマノムラクモノツルギ）を草薙の剣（クサナギノツルギ）と名を変更しました。
ヤマトタケルは、すぐに国造の屋敷へ向かい、国造りやその一族、野盗もろとも一撃で斬り倒していきました。
そして、その屋敷に火をつけ、すべてを焼き払ったのです。 そして、その地を焼遺（焼津やきつ）と名を付けました。
ヤマトタケルは、さらに東へと進みます。
相模国（神奈川県）から上総国（千葉県）へ行くために、今の浦賀水道を船で渡らなければなりませんでした。
しかし、ヤマトタケルは、「なんて小さな海なんだ。飛び上がって渡れそうだ！」と軽口を言いいながら一行と共に沖に出たのです。
それを聞いていた海の神は怒り荒れ狂います。
海は荒れ、乗っていた船は前へと進めなくなり、引き返すことさえできなくなってしまったのです。
このままでいると、すべての船は沈み、ヤマトタケル一行は全滅となってしまいます。
さすがのヤマトタケルも海が相手では、どうすることもできなかったのです。
すると、妻のオトタチバナヒメは、「これは海神の怒りです。私は海神の怒りを鎮めます。私は焼津での戦いで身をていして私を守ってくれた貴方を愛しています。貴方様の命が続き、お役目を果たしていくことが私の願いであります」と言うと、荒れ狂う海の中へと飛び込んだのです。
すると、みるみるうちに、波、風は穏やかになり、ヤマトタケル一行は無事に海を渡ることができたのでした。オトタチバナヒメは、命をかけて夫のヤマトタケルを救ったのでした。
上総（千葉県）に着いたヤマトタケルは悲しみに打ちひしがれます。
しばらくは、海辺を捜索してオトタチバナヒメを見つけようとしました。
７日後にオトタチバナヒメの櫛を発見しました。
また、オトタチバナヒメの着物の袖を左右別々に発見します。
よって着物が流れ着いた海岸を「袖ケ浦」という名を付けました。
ヤマトタケルは、オトタチバナヒメの櫛を奉納するために上総の地に橘樹神社を創建しました。
櫛には、古来より呪術的な意味合いも多かったモノでしたので、ヤマトタケルは、その櫛にオトタチバナヒメの魂を奉納したのです。
やがてオトタチバナヒメ（弟橘姫）の魂は、橘の樹に宿ります。
橘の樹は、ミカンの木でありますが、常世の国では不思議な力を持ち、つぼみと花、果実が同時になる霊力が多い植物とされ、多くの家紋にもなっております。
ヤマトタケルは、この東の地で、常にオトタチバナヒメを偲んでました。
「ああ、わが妻よ」といつも悲しんでいました。
それが、「東の地」でいつも言っていため、「東」は、（わが妻、ワガツマ）から「アズマ」と呼ぶようになりました。
