アメノウズメは日本最古の踊り子の女神です。
アメノウズメは芸能の女神であり、神事芸能の祖神で、あらゆる神々を魅了する踊り「神楽」カグラを踊るこができます。
アメノウズメは、芸能・技芸・舞楽・歌舞伎など演劇の神様、俳優の神様です。
「神楽」（カグラ）は、神様を迎えるために行う芸能のことで語源は「神座（カミクラ）」といいます。
神座（カミクラ）とは神様が好む場所(岩、木、人など)の自然の力があふれる場所や、モノ(貨幣、鈴、榊（サカキ）など)のことをいい、これらを設けて、神様を迎える芸能行事を神楽（カグラ）と呼ぶようになりました。
天の国で、アマテラスが弟スサノオの数々の悪行に責務を感じ、天の石屋戸（天岩戸）に隠れました。
その時、世界はすべて闇に包まれました。
光を取り戻したい天の神々は、なんとかアマテラスを戻すことを考えます。

不思議に思ったアマテラスは天岩戸を少し開けて外を見ました。
すると神々は、口々に、騒いでいる理由をアマテラスに伝えます。
「あなた様より美しく立派な女神がおいでになりました！」「今、お連れ致します！」
と言い、イシコリドメヒメが作った「八咫鏡ヤタノカガミ」で、アマテラスの顔を写しました。
アマテラスは、自分の顔だとよく分からなかったため、もう少しよく見てみようと天岩戸を開いて体を乗り出しました。
その時、思兼神(オモイカネ)がアマテラスの手を引き、岩の扉を、手力男命(タジカラ）が、大きく開けアマテラスを天岩戸から出したのです。

それからしばらく後のこと、アマテラスは孫の「ニニギ」を天祖降臨（日本国を作りに降りてきた時）させます。

その途中の天八衢（アマノヤチマタ）という所で、鼻が大きく天狗のよう、赤い目を輝かせ、悪しきモノは口がきけなくなる邪視（にらむ力）を持つ神が立ちはだかりました。
この時、アメノウズメはアマテラスから「お前は手弱い女かも知れないが、あのような恐ろしい呪術のモノでも、お前の呪術が勝るであろう。よって何故、あのモノがそこに立っているのかを聞きなさい」と言われました。
アメノウズメは「天の御子様が、来た道の途中で、何故そなたは、道を塞ぐのか？そなたは何者であるか？」と聞きました。
口がきけない呪術をかけたはずのアメノウズメが、口をきいたことで、この勝負はアメノウズメの勝ちとなりました。
そして、この神は「私は、この地上の神、猿田彦神（サルタヒコ）と申します。天の御子様が天下られると伺い、その先導役（道案内）をさせていただきたく、やってきました」と答えました。
アメノウズメは、サルタヒコの目を見つめました。
アメノウズメには、真実を見抜く特別な呪力も持っていたからです。
