アカルヒメは「明るい姫」を表しており「色美しくつやのある女性」でありました。
また日の出の太陽の意味を持つ赤い瑪瑙（メノウ）の赤い石玉の化身でもあります。
昔、新羅（朝鮮半島）の国の「アグヌマ」という沼のほとりで一人の巫女がうたた寝をしていました。その巫女の下半身に日の光が差し込み赤くなっていきました。
すると巫女は、赤い石玉を産んだのです。その様子を見ていた男が、その石玉は、神様の宝に違いないと考え、その巫女にお願いをして、その石玉を貰いました。
その石玉を宝だと信じて、大事にして、無くさぬように肌身離さず持ち歩くようにしました。
ある日、その男が仕事のため、牛で食べ物を山に運んでいる途中、アメノヒボコ（新羅の神）と出会いました。
アメノヒボコは、男が牛を殺して食べるつもりだと勘違いして、捕えて牢獄に入れ殺そうとしました。
アメノヒボコは、牛は神の化身と考えていたからです。
男は牛など食べないと、釈明をしてもアメノヒボコは許しませんでした。
仕方がないので男はいつも持ち歩いていた、大事な宝物の赤い石玉を差し出し、ようやく許してもらい、開放してもらえました。
アメノヒボコは、奪った石玉を持ち帰り、家に置きました。すると石玉は、みるみる変化して美しい娘になったのです。
アメノヒボコは、その娘は女神で、きっと自分に良いことをもたらすと考えて、娘を正妻として向かい入れました。
娘は妻となり、毎日毎日、美味しい料理を出してアメノヒボコの世話をしていました。
しかし、驕り（おごり）高ぶったアメノヒボコは妻をののしりました。
妻はあきれて、親の国に帰ると言って小舟に乗り、日本の難波の津に逃げてしまいました。
じつは、その娘は日本最上級神スサノオの娘「アカルヒメ」であったのです。
当時スサノオは。近畿や摂津（大阪方面）での国造りをしていて、次なる開拓するための遠征地が無いか探すため、姉のアマテラスに頼んで、娘のアカルヒメを陽の光に変えてもらい、新羅の国の調査をするために送りこんでいたのでした。
しかし、アカルヒメが、ののしられて、摂津へ帰ってきてしまったので、アカルヒメを落ち着かせるため、摂津地方に3つの社を建立し、摂津地方のスサノオの社がある住吉方面の東側をアカルヒメに守護してもらうようにします。
また、スサノオの娘のアカルヒメを、ないがしろにした新羅国を攻略するための遠征軍を組織します。
アカルヒメは、自分を宝物のように大切にしてくれた男の運命がわかっていたために、その命を助け、自分をないがしろにしたアメノヒボコを即座に見限る、「先見の明」がある女神様です。
またアカルヒメの明るさで摂津地方は町として明るくなり、一大商業都市として発展していき、現在の大阪へと成長していきます。
